Ping is a command-line tool offered by the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), Version 4.1.3. It is a part of the suite of GMT tools used for data visualization and analysis in geophysics, oceanography, and related fields. This program is primarily intended for echosounding, which is a technique used to determine the depth of bodies of water. The ping command collects data as a sound wave emitted from a boat travels through the water and reflects off the seabed, producing an echo. The time elapsed between the sound wave emission and the reception of the reflected signal allows for the calculation of water depth. Ping allows for various modifications to the sound wave parameters, allowing for fine-tuning of data collection based on various environmental factors.
